New San Diego Festival "West Coast Weekender" Premieres Lineup of House, Techno, Drum and Bass

February 5, 2016 - by Molly Sinclair

Festival season is right around the corner, and this is San Diego's year to shine. With the underground dance music scene rapidly emerging in the San Diego community, the announcement of a new festival this May in the heart of Balboa Park couldn't have come at a better time.

West Coast Weekender is the joint collaboration envisioned by event organizers Siesta Records, I'll House You, Soul on Beat, Art of Sound, SD Union, United by Bass, and the Deep End, who have bolstered the SoCal dance music scene for over a decade, throwing parties through the morning with some of the most legendary disc jockeys in the game. With help from coordinators of destination travel events at Miami's Winter Music Conference, Movement Festival (formerly DEMF) and Mi Casa Holiday (Mexico), it's clear that the Weekender will be the magnificent lovechild of many people that live, breathe, and dream dance music.

The lineup released includes elements of house, techno, and drum and bass; from the most feel-good music to the deepest and darkest. Doc Martin (Sublevel), Christian Martin (Dirtybird), Miguel Migs, Gene Farris, Dara and Manik are just a few highlights on the bill, along with some personal favorites at the Deep End featuring Justin Campbell, CaliParis, Third Twin, and Chrysocolla.

The 3-day festival is not confined to the typical cookie cutter structure, with different events happening each day and night May 13-15. Friday night kicks off the weekend with an opening party at Spin Nightclub, while Saturday and Sunday's festivities will be held at Balboa Park's World Beat Center, a multi-cultural arts and music organization. The afternoons will be filled with engaging panel discussions with global music enthusiasts and artists, hosted by DJ Times and Fusicology. And of course, the nights will be colored by a diverse lineup of artists spinning underground beats until the early morning.

“We want to showcase the culture and underground scene of California and bring more exposure to something special that’s been happening here for a long time in San Diego," says Eric Medina, one of the Weekender’s organizers. Medina, an artist at The Deep End, is right - the underground scene is nothing new to San Diego, yet mainstream massives have taken the spotlight in dance music's recent years, packing tens of thousands of people into arenas in L.A. and San Bernardino. For the music fanatic that craves the intimate environment of a high-energy underground show, Weekender's 3,000 person party is the perfect antidote to the oversaturated festival season. Better yet, 3-day passes start at just $79.99, a refreshingly low price for tickets in the skyrocketing industry.

To dance to mesmerizing beats from Friday night to Sunday night, to immerse yourself in captivating discussions with industry pioneers, and to connect with fellow warm and enthusiastic music lovers in beautiful San Diego could be the utmost exciting way to bring in summer 2016. Now is the best coast's time to shine - will you be a part of the movement?
